Take care of your DS Lite!

The Nintendo DS Lite is a handheld game system developed and manufacture by Nintendo Company Limited. It was redesigned from the original clamshell design to a slimmer, sleeker, and lightweight design to complement Nintendo's brand new home console the Nintendo Wii.

The Nintendo DS Lite has sold millions of console since it's release.

Later in the year of the release reports of a small cosmetic crack has a appeared on many Nintendo DS Lites across the globe.Reports of cracks on the left side hinges emerged from many DS Lite owners with photographic evidence to prove it.Then reports filled that cracks on the right side of the DS Lite emerged as well. The crack appeared between the R button and the power light. This crack as well as the left crack were very common.

"There have been many cases of cracks forming on the right side of the DS between the power light and the R button. When these cracks get worse, the DS starts to fall apart, and becomes unplayable. This is a serious issue.",stated the initiator of a thread on MaxConsole forums.

The cause of the crack is blamed on the left side of the DS lite coming too tight from factory or the plastic being too brittle.Once the hinge cracks, the whole thing goes crazy and starts to bind and break at where ever the weakest point relieves stress.

Nintendo claims that the crack is a minor problem and that only 0.2 percent of the DS Lites in America had a crack.

Here's the quote from Nintendo:

"In the U.S., the reported number of small cosmetic cracks in the plastic hinge of DS Lite systems represents less than 0.02 percent of the total units sold. This cosmetic issue in no way impacts the gameplay or integrity of the DS Lite. Nintendo stands behind the quality of our products and encourages DS Lite owners to contact our Customer Service Department if they are not happy with the functionality of their systems."

Even though Nintendo stood by their claim they offered to repair the affected handheld consoles free of charge.

I bought my Nintendo DS Lite exactly a week after it's release and I was quite satisfied with the quality.(This was before the cracked hinge reports emerged.)I bought mine at a Gamestop in front of a Wal*Mart and since they only had one in stock my brother had to buy his at the Wal*Mart where there was sevaral DS Lites in stock.

So we enjoy a few months or weeks (I'm not exactly sure of the time when reports emerged) and we were still having fun with our DS Lites playing wi-fi and other video games. We were browsing the internet when we saw the reports of the cracked hinge. We didn't think of it much.We didn't think it would happen to our dear DS Lites.

Later in the year I see a small crack on the right side of my DS Lite.It was small so I didn't pay much attention to it but I was very cautious from then on about the care I gave my DS Lite.

Then one fateful day;I was ready for a another session of Starfox:Command andI opened up my DS and the right corner all of a sudden felt loose and thecorner just fell off like it was never even attached. It still haden't sunk in that my DS Lite was broken and I was so sad.All my savings spent on it and it broke.

Later that horrible day I filed for a repair.I thought it would at least be free because I had warranty.I got an e-mail back from Nitendo stating that I would have to pay $81.00 dollars because the damage was physical and the warranty didn't cover that.So I had to resort to calling Nintendo by phone to get a discount for just $50.00.I don't like calling as I am very shy.So I explained my situation again to a Nintendo Customer Service worker and they gave me a price of $50.00 dollars for the repair.I could rest easy knowing it would be repaired.

After I sent my DS Lite in I got the replacement a few weeks later.I was so happy.I finally got back my DS Lite and me and my brother started to play one of our wi-fi games.I made resolution to take care of it as much as I could .I wouldn't let it break again.Although that was in vein.

It was December 31,2006;New Years eve and my family was having fun at the New Years Eve Party and everyone was enjoying the time.Me and my brother took along our DS Lites to play a few games.I was playing Lost Magic when my mom calls me up to eat dinner. So I start to close my DS and the unthinkable happens. My DS Lite is once again broken. The same way as before!"This couldn't be a coincedance." I thought to myself.I was devastated. This time I never noticed a crack and it came as a big shock.I took perfect care of it.

I still haven't filed another repair as I don't have any money and this time it will cost $81.00,because my warranty was already used. And it get's even worse.A few weeks ago I noticed a crack on my brother's DS Lite. Then two days ago his DS Lite too broke in the same way as mine. This couldn't have been our fault. We already suffered the consequenses once.We would have learned by then. There is obviously something wrong in the way the DS Lite is built that causes the crack.

Now we don't have money to repair and we'll have to wait practically a whole 'nother year for that Wii we've always wanted.(We always share our money.)I'm not sure if I should send it in if the same thing will happen again.I think Nintendo needs to do something about this problem.

I'm not even sure they are doing anything to fix this though. It's been ages since the fiasco arose but it still has not been resolved for my brother and I and we hope that by the time we send in both of our DS Lite's in for a repair that they will be crack resistant.

Conclusion:

I am a big Nintendo fan and I do love the innovation of the Nintendo DS Lite so don't get me wrong and say that I hate the DS because I don't.I really love the handheld but I wouldn't want it to get broken once more after I get it repaired.

Wow. That bites.

I just recently got mine. I got mine on May 3rd, I love it, but it scratches easily kinda. It's already scratched.

And the DS Lite is so much better than the DS.
I hope that hinge thing doesn't happen to mine.

I've heard about that cracked hinge thing awhile ago. Hasn't happened to me. No scratches either. I hope it doesn't happen. I shall let no one touch my DS :)

Mine has a few minor scratches, nothing like my original though. The Lite doesn't really scratch as bad.

And no one shall touch my Lite either. =) XD

Old news. :O

My friend's Lite had a crack in it, then his sister left it at the park. xD She's responsible for the deaths of his Phat (dropped it, top screen cracked) and his Lite. Hahahaha.
