                                     chapter 1
It was dark.
Max could sence something was near. The young dog's eyes opened wide as he scanned the dence undergrowth. This place was unfamiliiar, but the strange scents drew him onward, deeper into the shadows. His stomach growled, reminding him of his hunger. He opened his jaws slightly to let the warm smells of the forest reach the scent glands on the roof of his mouth. Musty oders of leaf mold mingled with the tempting aroma of a small feathered creature. Suddenly a flash of grey raced past him. Max stopped still, listening. Lenghths away max knew it was a bird-he could feel the rapid pulshing of a tiny heart deep within his ears. He swallowed stifling his rumbling stomach. Soon his hunger would be satisfied, slowly he lowered his bidy ready to pounce. He knew it dident see him. Max pushed back hard, and sprang kicking up leaves on the forest floor as he rose. The bird dived for cover, heading toward a hole in the tree. But max was already on top of it.He scooped it into the air. The bird landed on the ground, it layed there but still alive. It tryed to run, but Max grabbed it again and threw in the air. It managed to scramble a few paces before max could catch up. Sudddenly a noise roard nearby. Max looked around, and as he did the bird was able to get away. When max turned back he saw it disapper into the darkness. Max was angry he gave up looking for it. He looked around with his glowing red eyes searching for the one who made the noise. Suddenly the forest disappered, he was inside a hot airless kitchen, curled in his bed, moonlight filtered through the window, casting shadows on the smooth hard floor. The noise had been hard dried pellets moving in his food bowl.
Max had been dreaming. Lifting his head, he rested his chin on the side of his bed. His collar rubbed uncomfortly around his neck. In his dream he could feel cold air ruffling the soft fur where thecollar usually pinched. Max rolled onto his back. savering the dream for a few moments. He could still smell bird. It was the third time he had that dream, and every time the bird had excaped. He licked his lips. From his bed he could smell the bland of his food. His owners always refilled his dish before they went to bed. The dusty smell chased away the warm scents of his dream.  But the hunger rumbled on in his stomach, so max streched the sleep out of his limbs and padded across the kitchen floor to his dinner.  The food felt dry and tastless on his toungue. Max reluctantly swallowd one more mouthful. Then he turned away from his food dish and pushed himself away to the garden. Hoping the smell of the garden would bring back the feelings of his dream.
Outside, the moon was bright. It was raining lightly. Max stalked down the tidy garden, following the starlit gravil path, feeling the cold stones beneath his paws. Afterward Max went by the fence where the green dark forest was. The rein had stopped. Behind him the close-cropped lawn bathered in the moonlight, but beyond the fence the forest was field with shadows.
