Well.. we don't want to start out so like.. amazing yet, 'cause you're just starting. =P
And what exactly do you want in the pictures? Terragen has a lot of stuff to it =P Do you want different sorts of detail, [also known as 'eye candy' to some.. XD] Well for now I'll just do.. some blabber about it. XD In order to get good images, you gotta get plugins, accessories, etc.
Plugins:
Basically, you download stuff for detail.
acessories:
name says all. XD ....No, really. XD Acessories is basically, a bunch of stuff put together I believe.
Surface Map:
Woo. Like, the best thing ever on here. xD It's different terrains, grass, sand, snow, etc., I have a site for 'em, I'll PM it to ya. Besttt siteee XD Has tuts and everything.
Child...s.. or children? XD
Mmmk, these things are.. hard to explain. >> Okay, you have a main catagory. And then you press "add child" and then.. it's like a catagory in the main catagory.. I dunno those things confuse me.. XD
Effects:
Not entirely sure what EXACTLY this is. Haven't experimented with it yet. But it's OBVIOUSLY some kind of effect XD
And.. that should basically be it..

Now I'll teach ya about the .. icon.. things.. at the side. XD
Rendering control:
Controls angle, camera angle, [although I have technically no idea how to work that.. XD] rendering the image, making an animation, etc.
Landscape:
This handles the terrain. If you want to make the terrain with snow and rock, or just snow, ice, desert, etc.
Water:
Water. Handles how much and how little water.
Cloud cover:
At first I was wondering why we needed this - this can do A LOT. Handles the size of the sky, the altitude which I hate with a passion, how big and dark the clouds are..
Atmosphere:
This I really don't know about. But it handles the sky and land, etc.
Lighting:
The sun, it's size, the corona, etc.
3D preview:
.. I srsly like this thing XD You go into a 3D preview to pick out your image to render.
Last  Image rendered:
Brings back the image you rendered on Terragen.
..and what about button 9 whawhawha? XD
