GIMP actually has most of the same features as Photoshop, GIMP is just free and harder to use. :P

I've used Photoshop before; If you want to delete the background I guess you can just delete the background layer?

yeah, but ur really good with Gimp. =) photshop is easier to use, but if u can work Gimp then at least you can make sigs and stuff =) its better than paint xD

and @ Flames: Photoshop can be a little tricky at first. I remember i couldnt do anything on it when I first realized my dad had it. xD my dad's a photographer so he has to edit pics and he taught me about the magnetic tool and stuff on photoshop, but since u dont have really anyone to help you i suggest you do some sigs on paint first and then once you get more advanced then you can try figuring out photshop
