Chapter 1
Jewel thought she was a regular dog. She had no idea how great her life was. Her owner, Carrie, found her in an expensive pet store and thought she was gorgeous. She was rare, like a jewel, hence the name. Her owner truly loved her, and cared for her. She got two meals a day, and her water bowl was always full. Her owner spent loads of her time walking Jewel, every day. Carrie would often be found at the park, or gym training Jewel for competitions. Jewel had no idea what some other dog's lifes were like. She was oblivious to all the starving, homeless dogs out living of garbage in alleys. Jewel thought that all other dogs had lifes like her's. After all, how would she? All the dogs that she knew, she met on a walk or at the gym or park. They all had loving owners, like Carrie. She never came in contact with one of the many less fortunate dogs. One particular day in the middle of fall, Carrie had her first day of eighth grade. Jewel was woken up early morning by Carrie squeeling on the phone with her best friend about how great this year was going to be. Jewel trotted over to the phone and looked up at Carrie with her big puppy eyes. Carrie, giving in to the look, said a quick goodbye and the pair walked into the kitchen for breakfast. After munching her food, Jewel followed Carrie around untill her bus came to take her to school. She waited on the sidewalk untill Carrie was out of sight. Then, she saw Carrie's mom off to work and decided to take a nap. After she woke up, feeling refreshed, she went out the doggie-door and into the yard. She jogged around the yard, to check things out. Seeing and sensing no danger, she decided to play with her new squeaky toy. She grabbed the bone-shaped toy between her teeth and bit down hard. Jewel's ears perked up at the sound of the high-pitched squeel. How she loved that sound. Then, feeling mischievious, she flung her toy to the other side of the yard, and galloped after it. To Jewel, that was really fun. When she picked it up again, she threw it in a different direction. UH-OH! Jewel couldn't see where the ball landed. There was woods behind Carrie's house that backed into the major city of the area. Jewel wandered over to the fence at which she threw the ball at. She didn't see it, and she walked up right against the fence. She saw a hole, so she crawled threw it. The only thing on her mind was the ball, and she couldn't concentrate on anything else. She thought she saw the ball to her left so she ran over there. Then, a white flash to her left caught her eye and she ran after it. Before she knew it, an hour had passed and Jewel had no idea where she was. She was hopelessly and utterly lost.
After hours of endless wandering, Jewel was exhausted. She was only a small dog, and she already got her share of exercize today. She decided to rest for a moment, then try to find her way home. Jewel knew that Carrie would be home soon, and she missed her. Jewel layed down, and before she knew it, her head was between her paws and her eyes were closed. After Jewel woke up, she felt refreshed. She looked around, but all she saw was grass, trees, and vines. She tried to follow her nose, and set off to her left. After going for about ten minutes another dog, homeless, and much bigger, jumped out in front of tiny Jewel. She had never been this close to danger before, and her whole body was shaking. This large dog started to walk toward her and Jewel was too scared to even move. She could only stare. Then, when the dog was right in front of Jewel, he stopped. Jewel was taked aback. "What? Why did he stop?" she thought, thankfully. "What is that thing around your neck?" growled the other dog. "It's a collar, so whoever finds me can take me back home!" yapped Jewel. Then, the other dog sat down, and whimpered a little. "What's wrong?" barked Jewel in her high pitched voice. "I...I...I don't have a home" replied the larger dog. Jewel was surprised. She thought every dog had a home! "I'm soo sorry! We can be friends! Maybe I'll show you my home. If I can find it..."
