Chapter 1: Backyard Oceans
Jamie gasped. She was looking out on the beautiful blue water of the vast ocean in front of her. Dolphins leaped out of the water at a distance, then zoomed up to her squeaking and waving. She walked up to the edge of the pier, admiring the dolphins. Jamie hoped she would see a sea serpent one day, like the Loch Ness Monster. Some people believe that a huge serpent-like sea monster in the waters of Loch Ness in Scotland. People have gone missing in those areas, others claim they've seen the serpent, and some don't believe there is a Loch Ness Monster at all. Details of what the monster looks like is unknown, but Jamie beieved it have the tail of a mermaid, with scales covering its body, and the shape of it was unique. She also thought that it was just a speciesof animalthat we haven't discovered yet, and it just wanted to live in peace. If it ate people, it probably just ate them because it needed food, and it couldn't get any other food because everyone was trying to capture it and prove its existence. Jamie continued getting closer and closer to the edge of the pier as she giggled and watched the dolphins. She got too close, and lost her balance. She screamed as she fell into the water, surprised. When she came up to the surface, she looked around, confused to see her backyard around her. She went under the water and came up again. She saw the same thing. Jamie searched around for the dolphins. She found some, but they were just fake inflatable pool toys. Jamie sighed and continued swimming in her pool, where she wouldn't find any sea serpents. ----------------------------- Chapter 2: Oceanfront
When Jamie got out of the water, she decided to read some of her books on sea serpents and other underwater life. There was a meeting on August 18,1817, of the New England Linnaean Society, where they gave a deformed terrestrial snake the name "Scoliophis atlanticus". In the 19th century, there were major sightings of Sea Serpents on the coasts of New England. Jamie wondered why these undersea monsters were usually sighted in New England. The Loch Ness Monster was thought to be in Scotland, which is located in New England. Jamie closed the book. She went to the front door and looked around. Yes, everyone was definitely busy doing errands around the house or watching TV upstairs. She silently opened the door and scurried outside with a messanger bag from her left shoulder to her right hip. She wasn't going to let the thoughts of sea serpents mostly being spotted in New England stop her.
Now Jamie was at a beach 15 minutes away from her house-that is if you drive. It took her 45 minutes to get there walking. Possibly a little more. Anyways, the beach was a little small, but the sand was clean, the water a clear blue, and the pier's wood was just as nice as always. Jamie took off her clothes, reavealing her 2-piece swimsuit. It had the picture of a nice beach on it on the top and bottom piece, and the shirt part was as long as a regular tanktop. She tucked her clothes away in her bag, and put on her goggles as she walked over onto the pier. It stretched out far into the water, but there were rails on the sides, whch comforted Jamie since she couldn't fully swim. It was sunset, so the water was a little dark. Jamie went to the very end of the pier and looked out into the water. She saw schools of small and medium fish, and it made Jamie realize that she probably wouldn't see any bigger, let alone a sea monster. She sighed and looked down. Then she lifted her head and looked out onto the water once again. She couldn't believe her eyes. There, just feet away from her, was a mermaid's tail followed by arches of shiny scales, which changed colors in the light. On top of the arches was a line of bigger scales, which were the color of pearls, all creamy and shiny. jamie counted... one... two... three... four... five arches plus the tail. It was still probably pretty large for more of it was hidden under the water, and the head seemed to be there, too. Jamie watched the serpent moving slowly and gracefully. She came up to the very edge for a closer look, not taking her eyes of the serpent, not daring to blink. She put her foot out as if to take another step, and fell into the water. -------------------------------- Chapter 3: Saved with the Flck of His Nose Jamie sunk into the water, motionless. Then she suddenly began moving her arms and legs rapidly, not knowing what was going on. Then she saw a gentle face with a long body and some fins, and remembered the great serpent. She was so close to it. It began coming towards her. Jamie didn't know what to do. She was afraid of scaring it, but she needed air. She began moving her arms and legs rapidly in a struggle to get to the surface, but she just couldn't. Her energy was being sucked from her as she desperately tried to get air. She was looking at the surface, but when she turned her head, the serpent's face was there. It's snout was like a dragon's, and it's eyes were kind and inviting. The serpent began desperately circling around Jamie, wondering what was wrong. Jamie wasn't moving anymore, and her eyes were closed. The serpent quickly thought, then remembered how Jamie kept looking up. It zoomed under her and pushed her up with a flick of his nose, and held her up with his large fin. Jamies head didn't stay up very well, so the serpent pushed her through the water to the pier, placed her on his nose, and stretched out his body to place her on the pier, where she came from. Then, the serpent made a sort dolphin-like noise, and an odd creature came up to the surface. The serpent made another dolphin noise, and then placed the creature up by Jamie. The sea serpent made a final dolphin noise and returned to the depths of the ocean. -------------------------------- Chapter 4: People
Jamie awoke with the bright sun in her eyes. She just laid there for a while. She turned her head and saw a small snake right in front of her. She shrieked in shock, and someone picked up the snake. It wiggled around a lot, clearly frightened. A tail like a mermaid's stuck out of the water and a loud moan was heard. "What's your name, young lady?" someone said. Jamie looked up and saw some people. The one talking to her was a woman with wavy brown hair. Jamie replied, "What will you do with that snake?" "We're just going to take it to get it checked out because we can't tell exactly what species it is. I need to know you're name, though."
Suddenly, the tail sticking out of the water crashed down under the surface, and a huge wave pulled Jamie, the snake, and the other people into the ocean. Somehow, Jamie could see perfectly clear under the water, even without her goggles. She swam better, too. She went farther out into the ocean, but the other people swam to shore. Jamie saw the sea snake, with beautiful scales just like the sea serpent's, swimming ahead of her. It's whole body were like arches when it swam. Jamie had never seen this little species of sea snake before, and wondered how it could slither on land, too. Jamie saw a huge body of scales. It was the sea serpent again, but it didn't look friendly at all, for it's huge sharp teeth were bared and it seemed to be glaring right at her.
